ILLUSIONS OF THE WEEK!

We've seen many previous versions of this illusion, but all versions are impressive and deceptive, and here's another. Notice the three different shades of red in the background of this pseudo-Greek meander pattern. Well, of course you know by now that all three shades of red are the same shade, despite the very deceptive appearance of a sharp border 1/3 and 2/3 of the way along the pattern, apparently marking where one shade of red ends and the next begins. The darkest shade of red appears to the left, the brightest shade to the right. Does this make sense, in terms of the Bezold effect?

An illusion from Akiyoshi Kitaoka that is new to me although it's been on his site for some time. Center the red and blue pattern on your screen and stare at it a while. Notice the very strong illusion of three-dimensional depth that you eventually get, as well as the illusory weak circular motion of the red ring around the blue “sphere.”

Onward to the next illusion?
