Highest Academic Achievement Awards
Each year, the Physics Department recognizes individuals whose academic record is of particular distinction. Two stood out for their accpmplishment of maintaining a 4.0 GPA. They were recognized with the Physics Department’s “Highest Academic Achievement Award.”
Chong Jiang show details
Chong Jiang is from Austin, and went to Westwood High School here in town. His father is an electrical engineer, and Chong came to UT to enter the EE program. Apparently EE wasn’t challenging enough, and when he heard some of his dorm roomates raving on about Professor Pete Anotoniewicz’s PHYSICS 315: WAVES class, Chong crossed over and decided to also pursue a Physics degree. By the end of his last semester, he’d accumulated over 230 credit hours here at UT, so he was pretty busy obtaining those two degrees. He did research on theoretical analysis of wireless networks and data transfer rates with Professor Sriram Beschwanatch in the EE department, and starting in Fall ’08 he’ll be going to the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champagne to pursue his PhD in EE in communications or networking.
Halil Saka show details
Halil Saka is from Nicosia, Cypris (at population 50,000, it’s a little smaller than UT). Halil entered UT at the ripe old age of 16 years, so was in a hurry to get started with his career in Physics. Halil has stood out in all of his classes here in the Physics Department, and many instructor know him well for his weekly grilling sessions (he grilled the professors, not the other way around), in which he would challenge us for better explanations, or else he would even come to office hours with a better derivation. Halil was also nominated for the College of Natural Sciences Book Award. Halil did an undergraduate honors thesis with two professors here in the Physics Department, Bengtson (experimentalist) and Reichl (theorist), continuing a study in Brownian motion that he began in his junior lab class under professor Bengtson. Halil is continuing his studies in the PhD program at Princeton, where he will pursue research in elementary particle physics.
Distinguished Graduating Senior Award
Sarah H. Miller show details
Each year the Physics Department recognizes one individual whose academic record and contributions to the department and the university are of particular distinction. This year we recognize Sarah Miller who majored in both Physics and Astronomy. Sarah is from Dallas, where both her mother Barbara and father Amp are Professors of Dentistry at the Baylor College of Dentistry (there’s pressure!).
As a Physics major, Sarah did a senior honors thesis with Professor Richard Matzner on “Non-Linear Spin Contribution to Binary Black Hole Merger Kicks.” As an Astronomy major, she did an honors thesis project with Professor Shardha Jogeee studying the frequency and impact of violent galaxy interactions. This work led to her co-authorship on conference papers as well as a paper submitted to the Astrophysical Journal.
Sarah was the student President of the Deans’ Scholors Program here in the College of Natural Sciences, and has helped to create new divisions in the DS such as DS Music, DS Art and the DS International Exchange Program. She directed and produced three DS Theater plays, engaging large groups of Honors science students to participate. She chaired the Booth Committee for DS science outreach to the Austin community and directed the 2007 DS Organ Donor Drive.
Sarah also served on the Student Advisory Committee for the College of Natural Sciences. A notable accomplishment of this group is that they developed an advisory process to aid the Astronomy Department in the interviewing of faculty candidates, specifically about candidates’ approaches to undergraduate education, that is becoming the model for other departments in the College.
Sarah has received numerous awards from this university and abroad. In addition to honors in both Physics and Astronomy, she’s received the Astronomy Department's 2007 Board of Visitors scholarship and 2008 Outstanding Senior Award; an award for the best oral presentation on research at the 2007 College of Natural Sciences Undergraduate Research Forum; and a George Mitchell award for academic excellence in 2008, and she won one of the 32 Rhodes Scholarships nationwide in 2008, and joined the graduate program in Astrophysics at Oxford University as Rhodes scholar in October 2008.
