OPTICAL ILLUSIONS OF THE WEEK!

Probably the greatest creator of optical illusions in modern times is Akiyoshi Kitaoka, of the Department of Psychology, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan. Here are two illusions new for 2005 selected from the many Kitaoka has created in this half year alone! Above we see a yellow sunburst, somewhat similar to the Japanese flag. Look at it closely. Notice the blue spirals underlying the yellow rays? They aren't there! Is this a variation of the so-called "Rinsing Effect"? Below we see a new type of illusion similar to the older Cafe Wall. The blue tiled bars appear to tilt although they are all parallel and horizontal. Both illusions are © 2005 by Akiyoshi Kitaoka.

Another recent Kitaoka illusion. Despite appearances, the central square on the left is in fact the same color as the central square on the right, although the one on the right appears to be more or less the same color as the squares above and below the central square on the left.

Another very effective Kitaoka illusion, "seaweed." The green and white vertical bands appear to waver, although they are all straight and parallel.
