Reading references in the MI-textbook for 103N lab.

Present 103N lab manual is written based on sequential order of a traditional textbook. Below we list the MI-sections for the theory part of each chapter in the manual. The MI-textbook: Matter & Interactions, Electric and Magnetic Interactions, by Chabay and Sherwood, vol II, 3rd ed.

Chapter 1. Electrostatics

o    Sec 14.1-14.5 on electric charge, Coulomb force and electric field.

o    Sec 22.1 to 22.4. Gauss’s law

o    Sec 17.3: Field is the gradient of potential

o    Sec 17.5. Potential difference is the integral of the field over a segment .

Chapter 2. DC circuits

o    Sec 19.1-19.9 Current flow in an electric circuit, potential around a loop, series and parallel connections, role of a battery, internal resistance.

o    Sec 20.1-20.10  Circuit elements. Microscopic and macroscopic ohm’s law, ammeter and voltmeter. Kirchoff’s law (sec. 20,10), and more.

Chapter 3 Electron Dynamics

o    Sec 17.1 Consider the case of Sec. 3.2.3 in the manual, where electrons are emitted from the filament and are being accelerated toward the anode.  Assuming work done by the surrounding is negligible, energy principle implies that the increase of the kinetic energy of the electrons equals to the decrease of their potential.

o    Sec 21.1 Circular motion of the charged a  particle in a uniform magnetic field.

o    Problem: 21.P.42. Mass spectrometer.

Chapter 4. Oscilloscope

o    Sec  25.1 Two sources interference (Sec 25.1)

o    Sec 25.6  Standing waves and square waves

Chapter 5. RC circuits and filters

o    Sec 17.8 Potential difference in presence of medium: Dielectric constant

o    Sec 20.1. Capacitor is an element of the circuit. It is measured by its capacitance.

o    Sec. 20.6 RC circuit,

o    Sec 20.8 What are AC and DC? Various quantities: transformer, rms-voltage, phase difference between current and voltage, impedance are discussed.

Chapter 6. Electromagnetic Induction

o    Sec 23  Faraday’s law

o    Sec 20.8 Review “What are AC an DC?” discussions on AC current.

Chapter 7 Polarization of light

o    Sec. 24.6 and 24.7.

Chapter 8 Refraction Optics

o    Sec 24.8: Snell’s law, total internal reflection, fiber optics

Chapter 9 Imaging optics

o    Sec 24.9-24.10. Convergent and divergent lenses, multiple lenses.

Chapter 10 Diffraction and interference of light.

o    Sec 25.1-25.3 2: Source interference pattern (Fig25.12,25.13).

2 slits experiment (Fig25.14, 25.30,25.13).
