Lecture 6:  iq04

 1. E real? Information on the change of E travels at speed of light

 2. Atoms, insulators and conductors. Separation energy.

 3. Polarization of insulator:

o   Polarization=Polarizability x Electric Field

o   Force between Q and a neutral atom

4. Polarization of conductor

o   Migration of electrons: Drude model, drift velocity

o   How conductor and Insulator interact with an applied field?

 5. Force Q exerts on a wire segment (A is middle of segment). Read p604-605.

o   F on dipole due Q= -Q[2kp/r3]. p=qL.

o   Determine q from the condition: Eat Adue_dipole + Eat Adue_Q=0.

 Announcements:

1.  TA – sessions for [57027 T6-7p] and [57029 Th6-7p] are not available.

o   Students with 57027 or 57029 unique numbers must select one out of the 10 sessions listed on the TA/LA homepage to attend. Please email contact the TA prior to joining the session.

o   Need ~16 students move from [57030, JES A209A] to [57028, PAR 208], see Head TA Josh Hebert.

o   Book keeping: If a student plans to attend the lecture of this class on a regular basis, yet not register in this class, the student needs to switch his/her enrollment  to this class. There is no need to change the TA session attendance. However homework grade  needs to move to this section.

2.  Clicker related issues

o   During the semester there is no mechanism to adjustment your iq-scores. There will be 4 drops to compensate the 0-iq-scores due to legitimate excuses. Use your drops sparingly.

o   If you have enrolled in the class late, make sure record the starting date you attend this class. We will adjust your end-of-the-semester iq-score due to your late enrollment.

3. Added resources for this course. (See “lecture related” in the menu )

o   Lecture slides/handouts

o   HW-support problems

4. I encourage you to join the face book.  Our group in facebook is: Phy 303L M&I, Spring12

5. Contact your instructor through email and office hours.

o   Email me your questions on homework, lecture, clicker questions and textbook materials etc. (subject line should have: 303L-MI)

o   See me in person: After the lecture, or office hours: MWF 9 to 10pm. Often I will be available MWF from 10-12noon. Call me at 340-0292(cell) before you come. Other time by appointment.
