Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)

The integrated STM facility is a home-built system that has a base pressure in the mid-10-11 torr and has the capability of measuring samples down to liquid helium temperatures. The system is equipped with a sample heater for removal of surface adsorbates and with evaporation sources for metal deposition. The STM is connected to the MBE vacuum transfer line via a secondary transfer chamber that picks up the STM sample holder from a slot in specially-configured MBE sample disks and hands it off to the STM sample stage.
